چکیده

We survey some of our recent results on communication over channels with varying sampling rate. Varying sampling rate is caused by inadequate timing recovery and can result in a synchronization error, exhibited as a repetition or a deletion of a symbol. We review number-theoretic constructions and the upper bounds of sets of strings capable of overcoming certain number of synchronization errors. We also review results on how to use some practical substitution error correcting codes when the varying sampling rate causes a synchronization error. In particular we present the results for the Reed-Muller(1,m) code and the array-based LDPC codes.

Performance of high-rate adaptive equalization on a shallow water acoustic channela)

Multipath propagation in underwater acoustic channels causes intersymbol interference in the transmission of digital communication signals. An increase of the transmission rate on a multipath channel results in longer intersymbol interference, which ultimately limits the performance of a phase-coherent digital communication system. Recent experimental results, however, show a seemingly surprisi...

Importance Sampling Methodologies for Simulation of Communication Systems with Time-Varying Channels and Adaptive Equalizers

Formula-based analysis of communication links with time-varying channels and adaptive equalizers is not always tractable Monte Carlo simulation must be used to obtain bit error rate (BER) estimates of the system. Conventional Monte Carlo simulation will not provide estimates for low BER's due to excessive run time. Although importance sampling (IS) techniques offer the potential for large speed...

Wireless Transceiver Design for High Velocity Scenarios

In memory of my grandparents and dedicated to my parents Summary This thesis is dedicated to transceiver designs for high data-rate wireless communication systems with rapidly moving terminals. The challenges are twofold. On the one hand, more spectral bandwidth of the transmitted signals is required by future wireless systems to obtain higher transmission rates, which can result in the frequen...

Single-Carrier Frequency-Domain Equalization for Orthogonal STBC over Frequency-Selective MIMO-PLC channels

In this paper we propose a new space diversity scheme for broadband PLC systems using orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) transmission combined with single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). To apply this diversity technique to PLC channels, we first propose a new technique for combining SC-FDE with OSTBCs applicable to all dispersive multipath channels impaired by impulsive...

Basis Expansion Models and Diversity Techniques for Blind Identification and Equalization of Time-Varying Channels

The time-varying impulse response of rapidly fading mobile communication channels is expanded over a basis of complex exponentials that arise due to Doppler effects encountered with multipath propagation. Blind methods are reviewed for estimating the bases’ parameters and the model orders. Existing second-order methods are critiqued and novel algorithms are developed for blind identification, d...
